ICSE Board examinations 2020 for class 10 commenced on the 27th of February, 2020 and the first paper was English Language.

Analysis of ICSE Class 10 English Language Paper 2020

The English Language paper consisted of 80 marks having a duration of two hours. Candidates were required to answer five questions, all of which were compulsory.

In Question 1, candidates were required to write a composition of about 300– 350 words from a choice of 5 topics.

In Question 2, candidates had to write a letter from a choice of two subjects requiring either a formal or an informal mode of treatment.

In Question 3, candidates were given a specific situation and were asked to:

(a) Write a notice based on given directions.

(b) Write an e-mail on the same content as the notice.

In Question 4, an unseen prose passage of about 450 words was given. A number of questions requiring short answers were asked on the passage. The last question consisted of a summary.

In Question 5, a number of short answer questions were set to test the candidates’ knowledge of functional grammar, structure and use of the language.

Importance of English Language Paper in Board Exams

English is one of the most important subjects in ICSE 10 examination. In the marking system, the two English papers, English Literature, and English language are included in one broad category – English. The marks for these subjects are not calculated separately but the average of the two papers is taken as the marks for English.

English is a compulsory subject. Its marks have to be included in the marks of the best of five subjects. That is why it is important to do well in both the English papers. Marks of a single subject are going to affect not only the grade of the category but also the overall percentage of a student.
